I'm told by Harry Hughes that the second annual Concertina Cruinniu in Miltown Malbay is set for February 14-16, 2014.

He mentioned a number of activities that the Oidreacht an Chlair has planned for the weekend:

Noel Hill will head up a panel of tutors, and will give a solo concert.

Rick Epping and Mick Kinsella and concertina colleagues will give a concert.

A local young concertina player 'will have a bevy of her friends doing a trio of duets, namely, concertina and whistle, concertina and fiddle, etc.'

Steve Chambers will do practical maintenance and repair

And last but not least, there will be a forum entitled Clare Women and Mrs O'Dwyer's Old German Concertina that will feature a roundtable of discussion of old musical times in Clare, especially among the women at the home setting, where house dance tunes were played on German concertinas. That discussion will be spiced up with some tunes played on the old concertina (see my website or elsewhere in this forum for information about that project, which was started after last year's Cruinniu). Most if not all of the project's volunteer lady musicians will take part (the ladies include Mary MacNamara, Jacqueline McCarthy, Josephine Marsh, Ann Kirrane, Dympna O'Sullivan and Angela Crotty). Sean O'Dwyer promises to be there to say a few words about his mother and play a tune or two from her repertoire. I hope to be there to emcee that discussion. Time for some retro!

Last February the weather in Miltown was great...is it too much to hope for a repeat?

Final details will be posted on the OaC website at http://oac.ie/site/

All the best,

Dan

It looks like a very fine programme. Hats off to the OAC for including Cormac Begley and the discussion on dual players of concertina and fiddle in West Clare. Several names come to mind, and having Angela Crotty as moderator is perfect. February will be buzzing with music in Clare.

Just a note to say that the forum Clare Women and Mrs O'Dwyer's Old German Concertina mentioned above will be accompanied by the launch of the CD that marks the completed project (see post). All of the project's outstanding women contributors, plus Mrs. O'Dwyer's son Sean O'Dwyer, will be there to celebrate the old concertina and the conclusion of the effort....as well as play some tunes on it and tell stories of the old German concertina in the west of Ireland. A night not to be missed!

For those in North America, the CD launch for areas to the west of the pond will coincide with Ann Droney Kirrane's visit to the Palestine concertina weekend, March 27-29 in east Texas, described here.

Come join us at one of these events!

Wouldn't miss it for the world! :)
