spindizzy Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 (edited) An Easter weekend challenge this one; definitely not for the faint hearted! Another EC player said I should learn this one ... thanks for remindinding me :-) I think he said that it had every accidental on the box ... I haven't checked And while I'm here, here's a tune to learn for a couple of weeks time. spindizzy Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 What a delightful wee tune - especially the B-part. Thanks! Ah, but which tune? Hi Tallship Oops, I hope I haven't hijacked your thread so I'll say this loudly! ...................... LEARN JOE SCURFIELD'S FAVOURITE .................. It's a great tune from a great musician (I saw many times as part of the Old Rope String Band) And Gminor plus all those accidentals is good for the soul especially for us trad players who get in a panic if it isn't in G,D or A. (I've just realised what a mess I get into when someone starts a tune in C!) ps Can this be played on an Anglo? Happy Easter pps You can start learning S. Georges Day NEXT weekend - actually you could probably start learning in on the 23rd
Pete Dunk Posted April 13, 2009 Author Posted April 13, 2009 Oops, I hope I haven't hijacked your thread ... Chris, my comment was very much tongue in cheek! Love the St. George's Day tune and I've added it to my collection but so far The News of the Victory leaves me a bit cold, p'raps that's just a limitation of the abc midi playback. Is there a good recorded version anywhere? Oh. and this isn't really my thread, I only started it. Anyone is welcome to pitch in with a good tune at any time. Pete.

Here's a sound clip, it's also known as (Jolly) Tars of the Victory Find tars about half way down and click on the RA icon by that paragraph ... I'm not sure it would inspire me to play it though ... I think this is one of those VERY JOLLY tunes though it is also nice and "lumpy" as a friend insists on saying about this sort of thing. Here's a better one (Whinhams reel on track 4 sounds like a good tune too, not sure about their version of the Banks of the Dee though - more like a march than a waltz) Chris (and all the hot cross buns are finished now )

Pete Dunk Posted April 15, 2009 Author Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) It's a bit too early for the weekend I know but I'm at a loose end at the moment as Sally's away visiting her sick mum and I just had a pleasurable few minutes playing this one through several times, it's a lovely tune. The fingering is a bit tricky in places on the English, no idea what it's like to play on an anglo or duet. Give it some welly! X:1 T: Joe Scurfield's Favourite C: Robin Dunn D: Syncopace Many thanks for this. Having decided that I would need several years to get this right, I dug out the Syncopace CD. Many delights there. Now I feel inspired to persist with the tune. Maybe only two years!
Pete Dunk Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 Good for you Roger, let's make a race of it. I'm currently playing it at about two beats a minutes and still making mistakes! Here's a really pretty 6/8 tune that plays equally well as a jig or slowed down and played as a waltz. I think I'm going through a Billy Pigg phase ... spindizzy Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 (edited) This is such a good thread that I'm going to hijack it again :-) This is a tune that I learnt while ago (I found it by accident while I was looking for Puddleglum's Misery by John Kirkpatrick - another great tune!) This is a good one, like Joe Scurfield's, for getting the dusty buttons into play. (ps I've no idea why its called a hornpipe with that key signature - I've also found it notated in 6/8) I've put it into the Tune database so the dots are easily available. Pete Dunk Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 Chris, add the field Q:400 and suddenly the piece comes alive! As to the time signature of 12/8 as a hornpipe, that's no odder than the original time signature of 3/2 for a hornpipe. Top heavy time signatures just aren't popular any more, it doesn't mean they're no longer valid. The Dm key signature gives it an interesting twist, good tune! There are a few sample mp3 online (I did find a really fun one on some sort of tuba ) but most are lively versions on hammer dulcimer. Chris
Pete Dunk Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 I hope to be far too busy at the Jack in the Green festival in Hastings this weekend to be posting here so here's a jolly tune to keep you busy if you find yourself at a loose end. The original score describes this as a 'fast march' and I'm not sure if it's a hornjig or a jigpipe but it's certainly a jig with a limp that works played at any tempo from slow air to a gallop. This is particularly difficult on the English in my opinion but Sally is knocking it out in fine style now. Damn!
